How will I know if a therapist is right for me?

Finding the right therapist is a personal process, and it’s important to choose someone who makes you feel comfortable, understood, and supported. Here are some steps and tips to help you determine if a therapist is a good fit for you:

1. Trust Your Initial Impressions

During your first session or consultation, pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel heard, respected, and understood?

A good therapist will create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be honest.

2. Consider Their Approach

During your first session or consultation, pay attention to how you feel. Do you feel heard, respected, and understood?

A good therapist will create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be honest. That said, most therapists do also adapt to the needs of their clients, so this is a chance to talk about any therapy you might have had before and how beneficial you found it.

My belief is very much that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will determine how successful the outcomes are.

3. Check for Compatibility

Personal connection matters. You should feel a sense of rapport and trust.

If you feel uncomfortable or judged, it may not be the right match, even if the therapist is experienced.

4. Evaluate Their Qualifications

You can look therapists up on the register they include on their website and also ask specific questions about their experience.

5. Reflect on Your Progress

After a few sessions, consider whether you feel understood and whether the therapy is helping you move toward your goals.

Effective therapy might not always feel easy, and it can take time to build trust,(especially if trust is one of the difficulties you are experiencing), but you should feel as though you're making meaningful progress.

6. Ask for Referrals if Needed

If it doesn’t feel like the right fit, be honest at an early stage. Therapists are keen to understand how you are experiencing your sessions and can often make other recommendations for someone who might be better suited to your needs.

7. Practical Considerations

Think aboutlogistics such as location, availability, flexibility and session fees.

Remember, finding the right therapist can take time, but it’s worth the effort to ensure you feel supported and understood in your journey.
